When the Lord is angry
[9] See, the day of the Lord is coming
—a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger—
to make the land desolate
and destroy the sinners within it.
[10] The stars of heaven and their constellations
will not show their light.
The rising sun will be darkened
and the moon will not give its light.
[11] I will punish the world for its evil,
the wicked for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty
and will humble the pride of the ruthless.
[12] I will make people scarcer than pure gold,
more rare than the gold of Ophir.
[13] Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;
and the earth will shake from its place
at the wrath of the Lord Almighty,
in the day of his burning anger.
[14] Like a hunted gazelle,
like sheep without a shepherd,
they will all return to their own people,
they will flee to their native land.
[15] Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
all who are caught will fall by the sword.
[16] Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
their houses will be looted and their wives violated.
[17] See, I will stir up against them the Medes,
who do not care for silver
and have no delight in gold.
[18] Their bows will strike down the young men;
they will have no mercy on infants,
nor will they look with compassion on children.
[19] Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms,
the pride and glory of the Babylonians,
will be overthrown by God
like Sodom and Gomorrah.
--------------
[13] “Your wealth and your treasures
I will give as plunder, without charge,
because of all your sins
throughout your country.
[14] I will enslave you to your enemies
in a land you do not know,
for my anger will kindle a fire
that will burn against you.”
--------------
[20] “Look, Lord, and consider:
Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,
the children they have cared for?
Should priest and prophet be killed
in the sanctuary of the Lord?
[21] “Young and old lie together
in the dust of the streets;
my young men and young women
have fallen by the sword.
You have slain them in the day of your anger;
you have slaughtered them without pity.
--------------
[9] Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again. [10] Therefore in your midst parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents. I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds. [11] Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your vile images and detestable practices, I myself will shave you; I will not look on you with pity or spare you. [12] A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds and pursue with drawn sword.
--------------
[30] “‘Let the sword return to its sheath.
In the place where you were created,
in the land of your ancestry,
I will judge you.
[31] I will pour out my wrath on you
and breathe out my fiery anger against you;
I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men,
men skilled in destruction.
[32] You will be fuel for the fire,
your blood will be shed in your land,
you will be remembered no more;
for I the Lord have spoken.’”
--------------
[29] Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes
will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
--------------
[16] The people of Samaria must bear their guilt,
because they have rebelled against their God.
They will fall by the sword;
their little ones will be dashed to the ground,
their pregnant women ripped open.”
