The Proud Heart
[4] Haughty eyes and a proud heart—
the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
------------------
[17] Your heart became proud
on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings.
[18] By your many sins and dishonest trade
you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire come out from you,
and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching.
[19] All the nations who knew you
are appalled at you;
you have come to a horrible end
and will be no more.’”
------------------
[9] Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. [10] But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. [11] For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
------------------
[6] When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;
then they forgot me.
[7] So I will be like a lion to them,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
[8] Like a bear robbed of her cubs,
I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion I will devour them—
a wild animal will tear them apart.
------------------
[23] Pride brings a person low,
but the lowly in spirit gain honor.
