Love Hurts
[3] “If a man divorces his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—
would you now return to me?”
declares the Lord.
[2] “Look up to the barren heights and see.
Is there any place where you have not been ravished?
By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers,
sat like a nomad in the desert.
You have defiled the land
with your prostitution and wickedness.
[3] Therefore the showers have been withheld,
and no spring rains have fallen.
Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute;
you refuse to blush with shame.
[4] Have you not just called to me:
‘My Father, my friend from my youth,
[5] will you always be angry?
Will your wrath continue forever?’
This is how you talk,
but you do all the evil you can.”

[28] Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
[29] So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;
no one who touches her will go unpunished.
[30] People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
[31] Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
[32] But a man who commits adultery has no sense;
whoever does so destroys himself.
[33] Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never be wiped away.
[34] For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury,
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
[35] He will not accept any compensation;
he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.

[28] “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
[29] “ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
[30] “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
[31] “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. [32] For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.
