The Root of all kinds of Evil
[6] But godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. [8] But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. [9] Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. [10] For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
---------
[5] Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
---------
[1] Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. [2] Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. [3] Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. [4] Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. [5] You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. [6] You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.
---------
[6] Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than the rich whose ways are perverse.
---------
[11] The rich are wise in their own eyes;
one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are.
---------
[19] Those who work their land will have abundant food,
but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.
[20] A faithful person will be richly blessed,
but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
---------
[22] The stingy are eager to get rich
and are unaware that poverty awaits them.
---------
[11] Dishonest money dwindles away,
but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.
---------
[22] A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,
but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.
---------
[21] An inheritance claimed too soon
will not be blessed at the end.
---------
[29] Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise.
---------
[22] A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
---------
[4] Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
[5] Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
